More Than Just Listening: The Surprising Benefits of Audiobooks
the one where I learn about audiobooks
I have a confession to make: I have never listened to an audiobook. I have tried many times, but for some reason, my attention strays and I lose half the story and I give up. I’ve been wanting to get back into running, so I think I’m going to pick them up for when I go on one instead of just listening to music.
I did a deep dive into audiobooks and found that they have amazing benefits. Here’s 5 amazing benefits I’ve discovered while researching if you’re thinking of picking up audiobooks.
📖 currently reading: The Man Made of Smoke by Alex North (physical book) & All Roads Lead to You by Courtney W. Dixon (eBook)
🎥 currently watching: The Sandlot (1993), Stand By Me (1986), & 📺 The Secret Life of the American Teenager
🎧 currently listening: my dopamine menu playlist for good vibes
Multitasking: The ability to listen to books while doing chores is something that might make me actually do the dishes by hand. You can also enjoy one while commuting, exercising, cooking, or while trying to fall asleep at night.
Improved Vocabulary: How many times have you read a word, but weren’t sure you were reading it correctly or not? I do this a lot. The word for me was melancholy until I heard someone say it. Narrators often provide the correct enunciation of words and when hearing them spoken out loud, you also get better comprehension of what some words mean.
Better Imagination: One of the things I love most about reading is it’s like a movie in your head. A good narrator in an audiobook can bring the story and characters to life so it’s the same thing for me.
Language Learning: I think this is so genius even though it’s something so small and simple. If you’re learning a new language, audiobooks can help with that. It can help with listening, pronunciation, new vocabulary, and speaking since you can repeat out loud.
Relaxation: It’s like listening to someone tell you a bedtime story. If you’re struggling to relax or fall asleep, pop in earbuds or play out loud to someone telling you a story. There’s a reason the Calm app has so many stories on it.
Have you listened to audiobooks before? Let me know in the comments.
Audio books are my preferred way to "read"! It's hard to go back once you realize how much multi-tasking you can do lol.
