I’ve always been iffy about Valentine’s Day. As someone who has been single for 12 years, I look at it as a consumer holiday, but as a single parent, I also look at it as a day to show my daughter how much I love her. This doesn’t mean I have to spend money to do it. I try to find things we can do together at home instead of buying gifts and cards that will get looked at once and never seen again. To me, it’s more about the memories and quality time than spending money because that’s what will be remembered.
I like to romanticize the romantic holidays.
First thing, put on this playlist.
In the Kitchen:
My daughter and I like to bake together, so I’ve compiled a list of treats we’re eyeing:
Red velvet cake balls that look so freaking good
These red velvet cheesecake brownies that look divine
A nice, refreshing cup of strawberry sweethearts cocoa
We also have a tradition to go out for heart-shaped pizza at our local Boston Pizza with a brownie and ice cream for dessert.
If I Bought Gifts:
Although I don’t buy gifts for Valentine’s Day, if I did, these are what I would buy:
Croc jibbitz are all the rage if you have a tween with crocs. Since my daughter plays hockey, she wears them all the time to, around, and from the arena. I’ve been eyeing these sweetheart candy ones, this LED light-up heart, a HOT pink pizza box, and this pink Tamagotchi-inspired one.
Lyla is also very crafty and artsy, but has yet to try embroidery so I thought these kits would be fun for her.
On the topic of crafty, we’ve been planning on making this Valentine’s Day XOXO banner. If you have younger children, here’s a list of Valentine’s Day crafts.
